Gathering in the forest (2012)

This trio of paintings depicts the same physical location in very different moods at three separate times of the day. Gathering in the forest (8 pm) shows a lush, twilit woodland location, its animal dwellers cautiously emerging from their hideaways. In Gathering in the forest (12 am), set against an enchanted, starry sky, the woodland dwellers are at their most active, chasing and fighting one another. Gathering in the forest (6 am), represented in misty morning hues, shows the dénouement of this nocturnal bacchanal, the animals either vanished or asleep, the forest trashed. These paintings point toward the basic building blocks of narrative, imagining the tensions and conflicts that abide in a single location's existence over time.
